More and more kick starters are experimenting with the pay-what-you-want model. It sounds interesting and some of these projects are making their goals. I wonder if it really works!

    TITLE:
Burgoo-A pay-what-you-want game of community stews

    THE GUTS:
Burgoo is a game designed by Dan Manfredini for 2-5 aspiring stew chefs which takes 15-30 minutes depending on the number of players.”
It’s really nice when a project can say exactly what the project is in one concise sentence! Let that be a lesson to you folks out there! TMG is a company that produces games, this latest campaign looks like their 15th project on the crowd funding site. With only a couple exceptions they’ve had a lot of success with a few games going over $40,000.

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 1.10.51 PMThe game looks simple and straightforward, the gameplay videos explain how the game works. For a board game, some kind of gameplay video is a must of course. One of the things I really liked about this project was it’s transparency. In one of the project updates the creators break down exactly how many people have pledged and where their pledges are going. They even show where their referrals are coming from. This is some very valuable information that future Kickstarters can use.

These guys are on the frontier of the pay what you want experiment so I wish them the best and I’ll definitely be following up later to see how the project turns out. For now though, I can’t figure out how they’re going to make it work. The amount that people are pledging looks like it will barely cover shipping. But they do have a ton of backers, so perhaps it’s a good way to promote your product line or game company. Even if they lose money on this project they now have 2,500 new fans to reach out to on their next project. Another benefit of this experimental model is the streamlined pledge levels. So keep an eye on this one and we’l see what happens when it comes time for delivery!

    PROS:
    • A bold experiment in pay-what-you-want
    • This model leads to streamlined pledge levels, very easy to see what you’re getting.

    CONS:
    • If you don’t have a lot of back up cash on hand for shipping then you could get burned very quickly by this model. I know from experience I can’t really ship anything tangible for less than 3 dollars!
